Chadwick Boseman, born August 28th, 1976, was an American actor, writer, and director, most notable for his portrayal as Jackie Robinson in the 2013 film, ‘42’, and his starring role in Black Panther (2018), as T’challa. He appeared in various other box office hits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), including his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). During the duration of his acting career, Boseman was heavily praised for his powerful acting performances, especially those relating to African American history, bringing stories to life and impressing vast audiences.
Amidst the superhero success, Boseman was fighting his own private battle. In 2016, he was diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer, which would eventually proceed to Stage IV. However, during his time of illness, Boseman continued to fulfill his passion. He was filming multiple projects in between surgeries and chemotherapy treatments, such as Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2016), and Da 5 Bloods (2020), all while presenting himself in the public eye, suffering in secret.
On August 28th, 2020, Chadwick Boseman was pronounced dead at age 43, following his 4 year long cancer battle. He passed away peacefully at home, alongside his wife and family. Given his emphasis on privacy, the news of his death and its cause came as a shock to the world, and his story has drawn much needed attention for Colorectal Cancer Awareness, especially for younger adults and Black Americans who may face a higher risk.
5 years following his tragic death, on November 20th, 2025, Chadwick Boseman received a much deserved posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Simone Ledward Boseman, the late actor’s widow, accepted this award at a sentimental ceremony hosted by the organization. It was also attended by director Ryan Coogler, who was very close with Boseman and directed the critically acclaimed film, Black Panther. At the ceremony, Coogler expressed the impact Chadwick Boseman had on him personally in a moving speech, describing Boseman as both a leader and a teacher, who taught him patience in his art, and further inspired him to pursue filmmaking. Additionally, he stated the lasting influence Boseman has on him even today, stating how he would not have made his recent renowned film, Sinners (2025), if it had not been for Boseman’s death. Coogler utilized his guidance whilst directing the film and consistently thought, “What would Chadwick do?”, he claims. Award winning actress, Viola Davis, also gave a heartfelt speech at the ceremony, referring to him as a “conduit for the divine”, and an “artist focused on meaning, rather than fame.”
In conclusion, this honor has deeply recognized and acknowledged Chadwick Boseman’s profound impact in the film and entertainment industry through his artistic expression, leaving an undeniable mark on the coming future of filmmaking.
