The Varsity Boys Soccer team playoff run came to an end on Tuesday night after a hard-fought game that the Crusaders lost in a penalty shootout.
From the opening whistle, McClancy and Iona Prep showed playoff intensity. McClancy dominated the first half, having most of the possession and creating more chances. In the second half, Iona found their rhythm and played a bit better, but couldn’t score. Crusader’s defense was held strong by Ryan Hamill, who stopped many chances so that Iona Prep couldn’t score. Despite multiple opportunities on offense, neither side could find the back of the net in regulation or the two 10-minute extra time halves.
The game came down to penalties, where every shot mattered. After a tense start, the Crusader’s first penalty was saved, proving to be a deciding moment in the shootout. Though the loss was heartbreaking, especially for the seniors, the team left everything on the field.
The game marked the end of an incredible season filled with effort and heart. The seniors John, Michael, Tenzin, Brian, Dylan, George, Sanjay, Blake, Chris, and Mark led with passion and will be remembered for their leadership. While the playoff journey ended sooner than hoped, the Crusader’s spirit lives on.
