This school year is approaching its end, and the Class of 2025 is especially feeling this ending. Soon, they’ll be walking across a stage, cap and gown on, surrounded by their classmates, and then turning their tassel, culminating their final year of high school and beginning their new college life. As a junior student, this is my penultimate year of high school, so to better understand end-of-year emotions, I chose to interview one of my senior friends, Martyna Prochniewicz ‘25, who is president of our school’s Newspaper club.
Q: Why did you choose to join the newspaper?
“Because I was already in the Creative Writing club, and I loved the company of the people in Creative Writing and the club allowed me to enhance my passion for writing, so I figured I might as well join the newspaper. Also, Ms. Colon was the moderator, which was a bonus.”
Q: Favorite article you’ve ever written?
“The one about choir (March 21, 2024), just because it’s the longest one I’ve created and the fact the article’s pretty well written. Also, this technically isn’t an article but I liked the process of the ‘Get to know our student body president’ video because I devoted a good period of time to completing it and was proud of the results. Also, it was extremely fun to film. We shared a lot of laughs over the course of filming.
Q: What is your favorite thing about being part of this club?
“My favorite part of the club, honestly, has to be the people. We all talk together about everything and are all besties. Oh, and tea time! I love when we share with one another, it makes us closer for the experience and reading each other’s work because it’s fun to see what is going on in everyone’s brain.”
Q: What’s it like being the president of the newspaper?
“It’s a rewarding experience being the president because I’m the type of person who likes to be in charge. I like helping people by editing their articles, making accounts for them, and setting up their profiles. It’s not very demanding, and it looks good on your college applications too.”
Q: Advice for kids who want to join the newspaper club and writers in general?
“DO IT! Because honestly, you don’t even have to be an amazing writer as long as you have things you want to write about and know how to use basic grammar. If you watched a movie that you thought was good, that’s perfect to write about! If you want to share your opinions or writing with other people, just join the newspaper club. All the people are nice, and we all love Ms. Colon.”
After this interview, I realized that I need to appreciate the last few weeks of junior year because next year, I will be feeling similar emotions to Martyna. Whether it’s stressing over which college is better suited for me, excitement about graduating, or nervousness over beginning a new chapter in my life. I want to congratulate the Class of 2025 on their graduation and the best of luck on their future endeavors! They will be missed, but we are so proud of what they have accomplished.
