During Lent, we prepare ourselves for the coming of Christ through reflection, discipline, and growth. While many people focus on the challenge of giving something up for 40 days, the true purpose of this season is self improvement and a commitment to trying to do good. Jesus fasted for 40 days in the desert where he had no food or water and endured numerous temptations. Despite these challenges, he stayed committed to strengthening himself, which sets an example for us to follow. While sacrificing something is admirable, making a difference in someone’s life holds far more value than simply giving up cookies. His journey teaches us that Lent is not just about personal sacrifice but more about becoming more patient, compassionate, and giving individuals.
Some examples of things you can do to contribute to your community are:
- volunteer at a food pantry, animal shelter, community center
- donate clothes, food, or money to those in need
- help a friend or family member with studying, chores, etc.
- pick up litter
- write a thoughtful note
- be kind, offer support and encourage to all
- participate in charity events
- pray for others
- cooking a meal
All of these actions can make a large impact on someone’s life by bringing comfort, joy, and hope to those who need it most. It’s not just about what we give up but what we give to others. Even the smallest gestures can brighten someone’s day and that’s exactly what Jesus would want. All of these examples shape the lives of others but also help us grow into better and compassionate people. By focusing on giving rather than just sacrificing, we truly embrace the spirit of Lent.
