The very first St. Patrick’s Day Parade took place on March 17, 1762. It was created by a group of Irish military stationed in America. They were very homesick so they decided to dress in all green and sing native songs while playing the bagpipes.
The Parade has been held for the past 262 years, and it is now a tradition. It is held in honor of the Patron Saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick. It winds up 5th Avenue and goes past St. Patrick’s Cathedral! It consists of assorted bands, including high school bands and bagpipes, along with 200,000 marchers. It stays true to its traditions by not allowing floats or automobiles. The Parade is led by a unit of soldiers, followed by various Irish societies.
In 2002, the Parade was dedicated to the “Heroes of 9/11”, as it honored all of the first responders. It marched toward the Twin Towers, and it stretched for one and a half miles. The Cardinal said a prayer for all the victims. For the first time ever, in the city that never sleeps, there was silence on 5th Avenue. It was the largest Parade to date and for the first time in history, the President of Ireland attended the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of New York City’s greatest traditions. It is a special event that all can enjoy and look forward to!
