After the holiday season, food pantries have scarce amounts of food. Most people donate goods for the holidays to do good deeds, but they seem to forget that people also need help after the holidays. That is why the McClancy Student Council is holding a food drive for those who need it most! The annual food drive started on January 6th, 2025, and ends on February 7th, 2025. According to Feeding America, in 2021, 1,175,620 people were food insecure in New York City, meaning that they did not have access to a sufficient food supply to meet their basic needs. More than one million New Yorkers rely on food pantries such as the one the Student Council is donating to, which is why it is so highly encouraged to support the Food Drive.
It should be noted that during the food drive, the only foods that should be donated are non-perishable food items. Donating non-perishable items ensures that these foods are able to last long and do not require refrigeration. Examples of items that are excellent to donate are canned foods such as corn, beans, tuna, and soup or items such as cereal and pasta. While choosing what to donate, you should be mindful of the expiration date to make sure that it isn’t expired or does not expire soon, as well as the condition of the packaging. This means not donating any cans that are dented or any open packages.
No matter how small, every contribution can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. By coming together as a school community, we can help ensure that those in need have access to the food they need in order to survive. The Student Council encourages everyone to support the food drive and donate before the deadline. Let’s do our part to assist our community and make a lasting impact for the millions of people who struggle daily!
