Thanksgiving is a very important holiday, and it takes not only time but dedication and some spending on all the preparations. Specifically, finding that 20 pound turkey for the whole family. Different families have different situations and face different adversities. There are families in need, who perhaps do not have the financial means to buy a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner. However, there are many places that offer free turkeys and even free Thanksgiving meals. Definitely something to be thankful for.
1. Catholic Charities gives away free turkeys annually in different locations across the city. For example, in Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church in Corona, Queens, a turkey distribution will be taking place on Monday, November 25th at 8am. This event is organized by Catholic Charities.
2. The Salvation Army’s tradition is to distribute turkeys on a weekday prior to Thanksgiving. To be able to get a turkey, registration is normally required.
3. Masbia soup kitchen has Queens locations in which a takeaway dinner service is offered as well as a food pantry.
For those who would like to save up this Thanksgiving, there are local supermarkets making the same offer:
- Shoprite is offering free turkey or ham if you spend $400 using a price plus club card at any Shoprite location. This offer lasts until November 28th.
- BJ’s members can get a digital coupon for a free turkey after spending $150 in one transaction before Nov 14th valid until Nov 27th.
- Foodtown is giving a free turkey or gift card when you shop with your club card and spend $400 by Nov 28th.
- Aldi offers a Thanksgiving meal for 10 people for $47 and special pricing on Thanksgiving products through Nov 27th.
May we be thankful for being able to share with loved ones not only on Thanksgiving but every day. For all the chefs who cook on Thanksgiving, whether it’s mom or dad, grandpa or grandma, or Gordon Rasmey, thank you! Like Charlie Brown said, “All I can make is cold cereal and maybe toast.”
