As a junior now this last year has been incredibly strenuous without a doubt and as the year comes to an end I am crying tears of joy to finally enjoy summer. I know many others feel the same way even as teachers. That same idea prompted me to ask a few teachers how they felt this past year. As students we constantly are all on the same page about enjoying summer and leaving school behind but how do the teachers feel?
In the last couple weeks I sent out an email to just a couple teachers to get their intake. My email stated, “As the year comes to an end I have just one question for the teachers. How do you guys feel, whether you are a first year or you’ve been teaching for a while? What’s going through your head? Will you be missing the routine, the students or just anything? What are you excited about and what are you sad about?”
I’ve gotten various responses so let’s dive right in.
First I tackled Mr. Corso, a second year teacher here at McClancy, who is also the freshman dean. Mr. Corso stated, “It has been an interesting year. This was my first year as freshmen dean and I learned a lot about our students, our school and even myself. I am feeling good about the school year. I thought it went by very quickly.
I am a person who enjoys routines so while on summer break I will miss my normal routine. I will miss interacting with the students and rest of the faculty and staff as well. I am excited about summer vacation. I have not planned a trip yet but look forward to getting away for a while. However, I am also excited about the school year in September. A new school year is always exciting for me, it’s like a new adventure each year!”. While he expressed that he will be a bit sad now that the school year is over I’m sure he will be happy to get a break.
The next person I interviewed is a long- time chemistry teacher by the name of Mr. Scimemi. I feel Mr. Scimemi kept it most real while saying, “As the year comes to an end, I am both happy and sad. I am happy because summer is here. I love going to the beach and traveling. I am sad because I will miss all of my students. Even though at times the students can be a little overwhelming, I love each of them and will miss them in my classrooms. The routines are also something that I will miss. It is healthy to be in a routine and it will be an adjustment ending the school year.” As a teacher this year he has been really chill while also getting his point across, which is also shown in the words he used to describe his feelings toward the upcoming end of the year.
My next interview is with a first year teacher fresh out of college, Mr. Shaefer. A man of very few words, Mr. Shaefer said, “My first year of teaching has been a great experience. You never know what story is going to come through the door and it makes my day eventful.”
Over the years everyone has become friends, are acquainted with each other and got used to knowing the school. It is hard for everyone to leave school by the end of the year but we always are clouded by our own ideas. So I hope this article inspires you to say proper goodbye and let your teacher know how much they mean to you!
